A new study is reporting that violent crime ( shooting and gun related violence ) is rising in the youthful African American age group, even as they decline in the larger population. See http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/B/BLACK_HOMICIDES?SITE=NJMOR&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT
Juxtaposed against this news is reports from July 2007 that the unemployment rate among African American youth is 7 times greater than among other similar groups. See http://www.jobbankusa.com/News/Unemployment/unemployment_among_black_teenagers.html
Further studies show ( see http://www.epi.org/content.cfm/ib241 ) that the downward economy and recession is much worse on the African American Community.
Given these facts and the propensity for urban teenagers to join gangs the challenge to intervene and prevent good kids from becoming bad is critical.
